With the shortlist of 10 people in contention for Sports Personality of the Year 2013, we have a quick look as to who we think will be nominated and who will be the favourites for the win.
Andy Murray
Undoubtedly going to be nominated, as he has been every year for the last few years, Murray is also hot favourite to win the trophy finally after winning Wimbledon.
Chris Froome
Tour de France winner this year after coming second the previous year, he will surely be nominated after an excellent year. If it wasn’t for Sir Bradley Wiggins winning it last year, you would expect Chris to be a hot favourite too.
Mo Farah
Ended up not even coming in the top three last year in a stellar year, one which would have seen him win the trophy hands-down in most previous years. He followed it up this year with an excellent double win in Moscow at the World Championships, after breaking the European 1500m record in July.
Leigh Halfpenny
Had a great year as he was pivotal in both the Wales Six Nations win and the victorious Lions tour of Australia.
Alastair Cook
Though he didn’t have a great personal year in cricket, he captained England to a resounding 3-0 victory in the Ashes.
Christine Ohuruogu
By winning the 400m final in Moscow, she became the first British woman to claim a second World Title.
A.P. McCoy
By riding Mountain Tunes to victory at Towcester on November 7, he secured his 4,000th win, a remarkable feat.
Carl Froch
The IBF and WBA super-middleweight champion, currently ranked the best British boxer at the moment, beat Mikkel Kessler to defend his crown in a heavily-anticipated match. His chances will depend heavily on if he beats George Groves to retain his titles.
Justin Rose
The first man from mainland U.K. to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970; such a feat must be worthy of a nomination.
Ian Bell
Had an unbelievable season for England in the Ashes, where he had a huge hand in every England win and was easily the Player of the Series.
Other sports people who might be in with an outside chance include the world’s most expensive footballer, Gareth Bale, after an outstanding Premiership season in 2012/13, Sam Warburton after captaining the Lions tour and Graeme Swann, another cricketer whose performances in the Ashes were a huge help to England’s victory.
Our prediction of the top three, from third to first, is: Froome, Farah, Murray.
